Water Divining Namibia: How We Found 50 m³/hour Near Grootfontein
Water divining in Namibia remains one of the most fascinating and effective traditional methods for locating underground water — especially in remote farming areas where water is critical for survival.
In March this year, my father and I were called to a farm about 70 kilometers east of Grootfontein. The goal was simple but essential: find water.
What is Water Divining?
Water divining (also known as dowsing) is a traditional method used to locate underground water sources using simple tools such as rods or sticks.
In Namibia, where groundwater is often hidden deep beneath dry landscapes, water divining has been used for generations — particularly by farmers who depend on reliable boreholes.
While modern geophysical methods exist, many still turn to experienced water diviners in Namibia for their ability to read the land through instinct and experience.
Our Process: Traditional Water Divining in Namibia
On this particular farm, we relied entirely on traditional techniques:
No electronic equipment
No drilling data
No digital mapping
Instead, we walked the land using divining rods, reading subtle changes and trusting years of experience.
After identifying a promising location, we marked the spot and prepared for drilling.
The Result: 50 Cubic Meters Per Hour
Drilling is always the moment of truth.
At first, there was uncertainty — a common part of any borehole drilling process in Namibia. But then, everything changed.
💧 We hit 3 strong water sources between 40m - 100m delivering approximately 50 cubic meters per hour!💧
This is considered an excellent borehole yield in Namibia, providing a reliable and sustainable water supply for the farm.
Why Water Divining Still Works in Namibia
Despite advances in technology, water divining in Namibia continues to deliver results. Here’s why:
✅ Deep local knowledge of terrain and geology
✅ Experience built over many years
✅ Cost-effective compared to high-tech surveys
✅ Proven success in rural and farming environments
For many farmers, combining traditional methods with drilling expertise remains one of the most practical approaches.
Water is Life in Namibia
In a country defined by arid and semi-arid landscapes, water is more than a resource — it is life.
A successful borehole:
supports livestock and agriculture
ensures long-term farm sustainability
reduces dependency on external water sources
This particular success near Grootfontein is a powerful example of what’s possible when experience and tradition come together.
